Your perineum is the area between your vaginal opening and your rectum. Perineal massage is the gentle stretching and massaging of the skin between the anus and vagina which is normally done a month before your due date. Perineal Massage (PM) Is a technique used to help reduce after birth pains in this very sensitive area, it also helps prevent tearing during childbirth which could result in stitches or an Episiotomy. PM allows the skin to be more elastic and relaxed for birth. to increase muscle and tissue elasticity. Several studies have found that doing PM regularly reduces these risks. Most women will start around 34-35weeks in pregnancy. You want to do this every day for up to 5 minutes longer if possible.Continue to do this massage till you deliver. ( hands are cleaned and finger nails are trimmed Lubricate with vitamin E oil ) You may also want to use a mirror for this. Lay in a semi upright position. pillows may help.. It may feel uncomfortable at first you may even feel a burning sensation which is all normal and will pass as you continue to keep up with it. Remember to stay relaxed keeping muscles loose, this will also help during labor. keeping your body relaxed as you stretch and open up for baby.
